For the love of a dog

THE WIENER AND THE WARNING

Upon entering the little country store, the stranger noticed a sign saying "DANGER! BEWARE OF DOG!" posted on the glass door. Inside, he noticed a harmless old dachshund asleep on the floor beside the cash register. He asked the store manager, "Is THAT the dog folks are supposed to beware of?" "Yep, that's him," he replied. The stranger couldn't help but be amused. "That certainly doesn't look like a dangerous dog to me. Why in the world would you post that sign?" "Because", the owner replied, "before I posted that sign, people kept tripping over him."

Oscar, you are one cool little guy.

One mutant gene

One mutant gene. That's all it took.

While the boys were doing their usual routine of wrestling with each other and running around the coffee table like it was the Indy 500, I was kicked back with the laptop, checking out a few of my favorites websites. That's when I read about that one crazy mutation.

According to National Geographic News, dogs like dachshunds, Pekingese, basset hounds, Shih Tzus and corgis (a total of 19 short-legged dog breeds in all) have stumpy
little legs because they all share a single genetic mutation, which suggest that most short-legged dogs descended from a single stunted ancestor that could have lived as many as 30,000 years ago - long before humans started breeding dogs for their physical traits.

That means that a long, long time ago, a wolf was born with crazy short legs. He/she later had puppies who also had crazy short legs and so on, and so on, until humans got involved and used those short legs to their advantage in regards to breeding.

As I sit here and watch my "vertically challenged" brothers run around I pause and think, "Wow. If it hadn't been for a single mutant gene, my brothers would be the same size as me. Thank you mutant gene!"

Life Lesson #685

Just when you think life is tough and you have it bad...

you are reminded that someone else has it worse.

Hope today finds you safe and on solid ground
(not on a quickly melting piece of ice floating out in the middle of nowhere).

Happy Day

We made it! The weekend is finally here.
There were so many things we wanted to accomplish this week but never got around to doing them. But in the same sense, we had a lot of adventures that we couldn't possibly have imagined. Isn't life crazy that way?

As always, we have enjoyed visiting all of our friends and reading about their adventures too. What a bunch of lucky dogs we are that we have loving families who care so deeply for us that we have our own blogs so that love can be shared.

Our friends, take the time this weekend to consider all of our brothers and sisters who are not as fortunate as us. Volunteer some time at a shelter to walk a dog. Bring joy to the local seniors by sharing your furry loveliness with them. Visit a park and let the kids pet you. The possibilities are endless. Let us know next week what you or your families did over the weekend that was super special.

But no matter what you do, get outside and remember to take the time to smell the flowers and enjoy the beauty that surrounds you.

And remember to smile. Smiles are contagious.

Have a great weekend everyone!

The King is in his Court

Greetings all two-leggers and those of the canine persuasion.
It is I, Taz.

Why have I lowered my standards to actually spend time posting on this meaningless dog-infused blog?
Because today is my birthday, that's why.
I am now the prime-time age of 6
(in people years, of course).

Did you know that thousands of years ago, Egyptians worshipped cats...
and we have never forgotten this?!?

Therefore, bow down and serve me my servants.
This king feline is ready for my many treats, new toys and kitty scratches.

Let's not forget the Cat Creed: Everything here is mine.
And remember, a dog is a simple creature. They will come when called.
A cat, on the other hand, is not. They will take a message and get back to you.

P.S. You'll never see eight of us pulling a sled. Tsk! Tsk!

Mucho Gracias!

We have some of the best friends ever! What a bunch of lucky dogs we are!

We have made friends in all shapes and sizes since we have been blogging. Our backyard has literally grown to encompass the world. We have friends all over the earth now - and that is super cool! We received this beautiful award from our two tiniest friends, Lexus and Bentley at Munchkin Memoirs. These sweet and caring chihuahuas have hearts of gold. Visit their blog and let them know we sent you if you haven't already met them.

The only rule for this award is that to accept it, display it proudly on your blog for all the bloggy world to see your greatness and/or pass it on to other bloggers as you see fit..."

We decided that if you take the time to read our blog, then you are deserving! Some days we have a lot to say and others, not too much. We appreciate all of our faithful readers and feel you are deserving of this treasure. Feel free to take it and display it proudly. Pass it on to those you feel are well-deserving too. Make sure you visit Lexus and Bentley though. They are true gems!

Monday Funnies

We received an email the other day that just cracked us up and we knew we had to use it as our "Monday Funnies." We're not sure who to give kudos to since we really cannot read the website on the photos but these were taken at a panda reserve in China. These little fellas are so cute. We bet they would make great play toys. What do you think?

Really officer.
I promise I didn't take the bamboo.
I just found in lying here.

Uh... a little help please.

Best friends always have to stick together to help each other out.

Lucky Friday

Who knew how wonderful today was going to be when we woke up this morning. The day started out as usual... Oscar had to pounce on top of Mom to wake her up. Tink stood next to the bed heavy breathing in Moms face and Tucker huffed in her face, just for good measure.

The old girl finally lugged herself out of bed to take us outside to tackle our morning ritual of "watering the lawn." We made our way off our deck into the lawn when we all put on the brakes. It was like we were a doggie train piling into each other.

Overnight a town was built in our yard!

Mom told us to stay back and take care of business in another part of the yard but our curiosity was piqued. What were these things and who built them?

As we were walking back toward the house, something shiny caught our eye. We've heard stories but could it actually be true? Was there really a leprechaun and a pot of gold in our backyard?

As quick as a flash that sparkle was gone. The town remains so we are going to keep our eyes open for the return of the little man in tights. Mom said she is going to buy a lottery ticket, just in case.

Later, after Mom had drank half a pot of coffee and was checking her emails she came across this. Some of the coolest kids on the block, Life with Dogs, have given us their illustrious "Gold Hydrant Award". These crazy kids from Vermont make us laugh so hard our tummies hurt! We are humbled and thank you guys so much for thinking of us.

What a wonderful way to slide into the weekend.
We are some truly lucky dogs. We're hoping that all of our friends have a little bit of luck this weekend too. Be safe!

Good Eats

If you are going to feed your dog(s) "people" food, shouldn't you feed them something that is actually good for them?

We've compiled a list of six healthy, easily obtainable items that can be found straight from your markets shelves or from your local farmers market and can be added to your usual dogs meal. Remember, most dogs will eat just about anything but can be surprisingly fussy about new foods being added to their bowls. Start with small portions and see how it goes.

(Just a side note, we like to buy from our local farmers market. We always buy from those farmers that are chemical-free so that we are not ingesting harmful pesticides. Most of these will not be available at your farmers market but it is always fun to peruse the other fruits and veggies with your two-leggers.)

Ready...?

Here we go!

1. BANANA
They are high in potassium, which is great for muscle and blood vessel function as well as regulating the acidity of body fluids, full of fiber, which is a handle remedy for diarrhea or constipation, loaded with magnesium, which is important for energy and protein building, along with lots of pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) which helps metabolize proteins and regulates blood cell function. That means more oxygen to the brain and muscles. They also contain Vitamin C which is an antioxidant that protects cells and builds cartilage. So mush a banana into your kibble but just a side note, the compounds in bananas that give them their distinct banana smell are
offensive to some dogs. Try sharing a bite with your two-legger first to see if you are okay with the scent.

2. SWEET POTATO
Sweet! We love these guys! They are loaded with nutrients such as Vitamin C and carotenoids along with other antioxidants and phytochemicals. They are full of pyridoxine, potassium, fiber and magnesium, and are also good sources of copper, iron and manganese. Boil them first and then mash them up with a little safflower or olive oil. Don't worry about the oils. They are not harmful and in actuality, dogs need fats and handle them better than humans do.

3. RUTABAGA
Ruta-who? We can honestly say that we have never tried these jewels yet. They should be peeled, boiled and mashed just like the yummy sweet potato. Don't forget the oil with these turnip-looking beauties. They have high levels of Vitamin C, potassium and carotenoids which will aid eye health. They are also important to immune systems along with containing phytochemicals which are known to reduce the risk of several chronic diseases associated with aging. Rutabaga... who would have thought?

Moving on to #4

4. YOGURT

Only the yummiest creation ever (at least in our book)! We love yogurt! Loaded with probiotics, it improves our gut functions. It contains a number of nutrients like protein, calcium, Vitamin B12, phosphorus, zinc, potassium and iodine, along with riboflavin and pantothenic acid. Just a dollop will do. Sometimes when we have to take medicine, it is hidden in a dollop of yogurt. Makes the medicine taste much better!

5. FLAX SEEDS
These little seeds pack a punch! They are known for their alpha linolenic acid (ALA) content which benefits our coats, skin, bone and brain function. This is why we are soooooo smart! They are high in fiber and lignans which may be beneficial for insulin action. Other benefits are that they are a great source of copper, manganese, phosphorus, pyridoxine, magnesium and B vitamin folate. Use either a teaspoon of flax seed oil or grind the seeds up and add them to any meal for a nutty goodness.

(Whew. This is a long post for us. Our paws are getting tired.)

6. SALMON
Yep! Just as good for dogs as it is for humans. Salmon is loaded with protein and Omega-3 fatty acids - wonderful for our skin, coat and brains as well as helping to limit arthritic pain and other chronic canine conditions. A few pieces of cooked salmon added to any meal is awesome! Dogs also like to eat it cold or dehydrated like jerky. If you are suffering from arthritis, ask your vet if fish oil in capsule form daily might help.

We hope we have given you a lot of great information. Next time your people cook, ask them to share their good food with you. Be healthy and be happy!

Monday Funnies

All dogs are the descendant of the wolf.
These wolves lived in eastern Asia about 15,000 years ago.

Look at us.
We are ferocious, just like our ancestors.
Oscar is even giving the "evil eye".
Grrrrrrr.
We are wolves.

Note from Mom: Hahahahahahaha!
The rabbits in the back yard are shaking in their little rabbits feet!
